What is a pre-tank filter?
Stops bad stuff entering your tank:
• STOPS debris
• STOPS birds
• STOPS vermin
• EXTENDS cleans
• FILTERS water
What will it NOT do?
• NOT filter any smaller than ~50 micron
• NOT clean itself - requires regular maintenance
Why a pre-tank filtration system works so well...
One of the best ways to keep your rainwater clean is to stop contamination before it gets in the tank.
Our RainCatcher® Pre-Tank Filter System does exactly that — catching debris, silt, leaves, droppings, and even tiny particles before they even enter your tank.
Filtering incoming tank water to ~50 micron, a pre-tank filter extends the time between tank cleans and improves the overall health of your rainwater system.
A pre-tank filter is your first defence in your rainwater journey – from the roof to the tap.
FAQ: What does a pre-tank filter do?
It stops leaves, debris, pests, and fine particles like silt and pollen from entering your tank — helping keep your water cleaner for longer and reducing how often your tank needs cleaning.
FAQ: How does a pre-tank filter work?
Rainwater flows from your roof through a coarse mesh basket (catching large debris and vermin), then through a fine membrane that filters smaller particles before entering your tank.
FAQ: What are the benefits of pre-tank filtration?
It protects your tank from contamination, extends the time between cleans (often 5+ years), and reduces servicing costs. It also stops birds, rodents, and insects from entering via the downpipes.
FAQ: Does a pre-tank filter remove bacteria?
No — it filters physical debris only. For bacteria or viruses, we recommend adding a post-pump filtration and UV treatment system.
FAQ: How often should my pre-tank filter be serviced?
Every 3–4 months. You can clean it yourself or book a service with us — we’ll replace the membrane and check everything is working perfectly.
FAQ: What happens if I don’t service my pre-tank filter?
A clogged filter can overflow and block rainwater from entering your tank. It can also trap and rot pests, contaminating your water — like a tea bag steeping in every drop. Regular maintenance prevents this.
FAQ: Can I service the pre-tank filter myself?
Yes. Just remove the filter, rinse the mesh, clean the membrane in a bucket of soapy water, rinse well, dry, and reinstall. Or let us take care of it with a quick visit and replacement filter.
FAQ: Can a pre-tank filter be installed on any tank?
Yes. Our filters fit all concrete, plastic, and fiberglass tanks. We’ll adapt your setup for the best fit and flow.
FAQ: Can I install the pre-tank filter myself?
You can, but we recommend professional installation to ensure correct flow, sealing, and easy servicing access.
FAQ: What if I already have a pre-tank filter system?
Great — we can inspect and service it, or upgrade it as part of our FREE rainwater system check.
